Trout Lily

 

Common Name: Trout Lily
Scientific Name: Erythronium americanum
Range: Eastern North America 
Flowering: March - May
Habitat: Woods & meadows
Some times called a Dogtooth Violet because of it's white tooth shaped bulb. These flowers frequently grow in colonies and are frequently some of the first spring flowers to bloom. This photo was taken in Jackson County Tennessee.
 
Similar looking flowers: Yellow Trout Lily flowers have maroon anthers, Beaked Trout Lily flowers have yellow anthers.

 

Caution: Trout Lily can be strongly emetic in some people.

The young leaves, bulb, stem and flowers are edible. Either raw or boiled.
