Record Wiper Caught from Des Moines River

August 30, 2005

DES MOINES, IOWA - Youa Lovan, of Pleasant Hill, caught a 19 pound, 10 ounce, wiper that measured 33 inches from the Des Moines River below Saylorville Monday morning. The fish is a new Iowa state record surpassing the previous record, which also came from the Des Moines River, by 11 ounces.

Wipers are stocked in Saylorville Lake, among others, and are a hybrid cross between an ocean stripped bass and a white bass. Saylorville Lake empties into the Des Moines River. Iowa Department of Natural Resources fisheries biologist Martin Konrad verified the species and record.
