Michael Charles Pauling
Texas Game Warden

August 2, 2001

Port Arthur, Texas - Texas Game Warden Michael Charles Pauling, 47, was killed in the line of duty when he stopped to help a woman apparently involved in a domestic dispute along Highway 73 just east of Highway 82.

Warden Pauling instructed the woman to take refuge in his truck while he checked on the welfare of her two children in her vehicle.

The driver of the vehicle, Dennis Mouton III, 33, sped from the scene dragging Mr. Pauling down the highway. Pauling was eventually thrown to the highway and subsequently run over by two vehicles, one his own that was being driven by the woman he stopped to help. Mouon was later convicted of  aggravated assault on a public servant; he received 55 years in prison and a $10,000 fine.

Mr. Pauling had been a Texas Game Warden since 1996 and left behind a wife and two sons ages 15 and 12.
