Pelican Island National Wildlife Refuge

Pelican Island National Wildlife Refuge (NWR) is America's first wildlife refuge. Designated on March 14, 1903 by Theodore Roosevelt. The NWR was intended to protect the Brown Pelicans and other birds that nested on the island. Today more than 100 years later we now have more than 500 wildlife refuges scattered across the country.
