These pictures
were taken in
Standing Stone State Forest
in Middle Tennessee. This is a female moth which range in color from orange to red-brown, while the male Prometheas are dark brown to almost black in color.
These large moths have a wing span up to 3.6", with the females being
slightly larger than the females of the species.
Sometimes referred to as the spicebush silkmoth both the males and females
have eyespots on the front wings. Maple, tulip, apple, ash and birch are a few
of the host plants used by the larvae.
