Pointed Blue-eyed Grass

Common Name: Pointed Blue-eyed Grass
Scientific Name: Sisyrinchium angustifolium
Family: Iris, Iridaceae
Range: Throughout much of North America
Flowering: May - July
Habitat:
A picture was taken in the Cades Cove area of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. This blue-eyed grass averaged about 6" to 8" tall and was growing in small patches along an old fence row. If you see Blue-eyed Grass in Tennessee, it is probably pointed Blue-eyed Grass, because the similar "common blue-eyed grass" is not found here.

Sisyrinchium angustifolium (Pointed Blue-eyed Grass) is a member of the iris family. The slender green foliage of the pointed blue-eyed grass stem greatly resembles miniaturized common iris. About 1/16" wide the pointy stem continues above the flower cluster.

Pointed Blue-eyed Grass is a State Special Concern plant in some parts of it's range like Wisconsin.
