Swiss chard is a lettuce like plant that is fairly easy to grow
in home gardens. Not only can chard be grown in a garden or raised bed garden like ours. Swiss chard can also be grown in
planters or mixed into a flower bed. The beautiful leaves and stems really are decorative as well as edible.
Typically we cut our
Swiss Chard when the leafy section is about 9" long or so. I never throw away
longer chard but it can have a slightly more bitter taste the larger it gets.
I cut individual leaves using scissors near the base being careful not to cut
or damage nearby leaves. I try not to cut all the leaves from the same chard
plant. Doing this allows the plant to more easily produce other leaves from
the same base.
