The Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area encompasses 90 miles of scenic gorges, dense forests, and free-flowing river. The main gorge was formed by the Big South Fork of the Cumberland River. The Big South Fork offers remote areas with numerous opportunities for outdoor sports such as backpacking, climbing, rafting and kayaking, horse back riding, hiking, hunting and fishing.

Campgrounds

There are three camping areas accessible by car within the Big South Fork.

Bandy Creek Campground

Bandy Creek Campground is open year-round with reservations being taken between May 1st and October 31st. There are 98 sites that offer electric and water and 48 tent sites. There are restrooms as well as wheel chair accessible camp sites and facilities. Sites are offered on a first come first serve basis, but during Holidays, special events and the month of October the campground is almost always full.

Blue Herron Campground

Blue Herron Campground offers reservations between May 1st and October 31st, but is closed in the winter. There are 45 sites with one that is a wheel chair accessible site the restroom facilities are also wheel chair accessible.

Alum Ford Campground

Offers 6 primitive campsites with no restrooms and no water.
